This keychain is a simple project and a great way to practice working with paracord.
Supplies
- Two pieces of paracord, about 36 inches (3 feet) each
- Key ring
- Scissors
- Lighter
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Find the center of each cord
Fold both cords in half so you can see the middle.
2. Add the key ring
Slide the key ring onto the middle of one cord.
3. Lay the cords in a cross shape
Place the cord with the key ring straight up and down.
Place the second cord across the middle, making a plus sign shape.
4. Start the first box stitch
Take the bottom strand and bring it up.
Move around the square:
-
Left strand goes across
-
Top strand goes down
-
Right strand goes over and then under the first strand
Pull the strands gently.
5. Tighten the knot
Pull each strand until the knot forms a square shape.
The key ring should sit neatly at the bottom.
6. Repeat the pattern
Start again from the bottom strand and repeat the same steps.
7. Switch directions
If you start with the bottom right strand, move anticlockwise.
If you start with the bottom left strand, move clockwise.
This keeps the keychain straight.
8. Keep going
Repeat the stitches until the keychain is the length you want.
9. Finish the keychain
Pull the last knot tight.
Cut the extra cord about 1/16 in from the knot.
10. Melt the ends
Use a lighter to melt the cord ends slightly. Press them gently so they stay in place.
Your box stitch keychain is ready to use.
